Written by CoreX Editorial Team | 1/22/26

Wellstar Health System is an Atlanta-based nonprofit health system that operates 11 hospitals and 25,000 employees, including 600 in IT. They are a national leader in comprehensive care, serving over one million Georgia residents, with one in six residents choosing Wellstar for their care.

Wellstar IT ensures the highest quality of patient care by modernizing services and reducing downtime, enabling better reporting to senior management for the availability and performance of clinical applications.

Wellstar enlisted CoreX to help with the following:

  • Create a single source of truth for all IT information.
  • Achieve software and hardware compliance standards
  • Refresh their instance of Discovery
  • Remove legacy customizations that prevented automation and process improvements
  • Boost efficiency in their day-to-day practices

Improvement in Nearly Every Area

With these goals in mind, CoreX built a roadmap with phased implementations to reduce downtime and focus on processes that added immediate business value and supported Wellstar’s mission to enhance the health and well-being of every person served.

The results were tremendous for Wellstar. Here are just a few of the highlights:

  • Massive CI Reduction: By removing incorrect and duplicate CIs and then discovering those 350K CIs to push valid data into the system, CoreX reduced Wellstar’s Cl count from 7,000,000 to 350,000.

  • Seamless Orlando Upgrade: CoreX successfully guided Wellstar through the upgrade to Orlando, allowing Discovery to populate the CMDB correctly.

  • Accurate Asset Discovery: The fully actualized Discovery instance removed previous customizations and allowed Wellstar to discover assets with better accuracy.

  • Enhanced Reporting: Utilizing the full dashboard capabilities, Wellstar was able to add enhanced reporting with Performance Analytics and increase dashboard usage by 129%.

  • Essay Customization Removal: By going back to an out-of-the-box foundation with ITSM and ITBM, Wellstar was able to stabilize services and adopt industry standards across the board.

  • Refined Process Automation: In the third phase of their project, the team built upon the success of the Discovery and CMDB systems and began automating processes. They enhanced the application portfolio and financial validity, allowing senior leadership to see a more holistic view of projects.

Multifaceted Return on Investment

These changes have improved patient care by removing distractions and unplanned downtime, enabling a shift of resources to build and maintain systems and services that enhance the experience for clinicians, patients, and families.

Each step in Wellstar’s transformation led to radical financial results:

  • Reduced RCA from 30 days to 4 with an estimated per-incident savings of $12K.

  • Reduced mean-time-to-resolve incidents (MTTR) by 25%, which resulted in an estimated savings of $300K.

  • Increased automation by 59x and avoided IT salary costs of an estimated $200K.

  • Total initial annual savings of $512K.
